Leaf type

10-40 cm

Grows in dry, open habitats, creeping close to the ground. The bluish-green leaves render the plant more noticeable than the tiny flowers. The fruit resembles the tail of a scorpion, hence the name. A blue dye, like indigo, can be obtained by fermentation of the leaves.

2 to 5 tiny flowers in stalked heads. The standard petal is sometimes brown veined.

Spatulate broad end of the leaf tapers to the point of connection with the plant stem. Bluish-green, glaucous. Lower leaves single and spatulate; upper leaves triangular, variable in shape with the terminal leaf significantly larger.

Fruits Seeds

Pod: 20-60 mm, long and curved, ridged with 2-11 jointed segments. Seeds toxic.
