Description
The wood is very dense and unlike most wood does not float but sinks. It was used to make tool handles.
Open woodland, scrub and hedgerows.

Delicate, small yellow flowers borne in clusters before the leaves appear.
Leaves
Elliptic oval leaf, Lanceolate leaf is lance-shaped: long and widest in the middle. Oval to long, pointed, untoothed.
Fruits Seeds
Drupe: outer fleshy part surrounds a pit with a seed inside, the fruit being the size of a small olive, first red, ageing to black.
Edible
Fruit: quite acid, made into jellies.
Medical
Fruit: high levels of vitamin C, used in remedies for colds and flu.
