Description

Deciduous. Clematis vitalba closely resembles Clematis flammula but is more robust, forming large thickets.

Climbs through trees, hedges and over old buildings.

Flowers

The greenish-white flowers appear to have 4 petals, but they are, in fact, sepals with numerous stamens; in clusters of 3 to 22 flowers. Sepals hairy on both sides.

Leaves

Pinnate row of leaflets on either side of the stem. Leaflets stalked, oval to long, pointed and serrated.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of small, 1-seeded fruit with long, white, fluffy hairs.
