Description
Cirsiums are known as plume thistles. The plant has spiny wings the whole length of the stem. Flower bracts are spiny, straight and become yellow-tipped.
Grassy and waste places, disturbed ground, roadsides, orchards and olive groves.
Flowers
flowerheads are pinkish-purple in flat-topped clusters.
Leaves
Pinnatisect leaf is deeply lobed, almost to the central midrib. Spear-shaped lobes almost to central midrib, serrated and spiny.
Fruits Seeds
Achene: a cluster of small, 1-seeded fruit, feathery, with fine hairs.
Edible
Stem: peeled, steamed and boiled. Taproot (70 cm) in its first year, raw or cooked.
