Description

This is the only palm native to Europe. It is shrub-like with several stems emerging from a single base. The leaves, grey-green, are borne on long spine-covered stalks. It has the ability to re-sprout after fire.

Sandy habitats, stony pastures, gullies; generally close to the coast.

The leaves have been used to make matting, brooms and rope.
