Description

Deciduous. The Judas Tree is supposed to be the tree from which Judas Icarius hanged himself. The legend goes that originally the flowers were white, but they turned pink in shame. The French name for the tree ‘Arbre de Judée’ indicates its origin, Judea.

Rocky and stony hillsides and thickets. Often cultivated.

The deep pink pea-like flowers appear before the leaves. They grow on the bark of the branches and the trunk in stalked clusters.
