Description

Native to the southernly mountain ranges of Europe. It can be distinguished from the cornflower by having just one single floral head, cornflowers having many; it is also a perennial whereas cornflowers are annuals.

In France, the cornflower symbolises Armistice Day, the end of WW1 on the 11 November and as such is a common symbol for veterans.

Flowers

The flowers consist of blue or purple ray florets, surrounding a cluster of disk flowers.

Leaves

Lanceolate leaf is lance-shaped: long and widest in the middle. Grey-green, long, wider in the middle, pointed.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of 1-seeded fruit.

Edible

Flowers: mostly used as a culinary decoration.
