Description
A much branched, slightly tangled plant with grooved stems. From the bracts, long, yellowish spines emerge, forming a star, additional shorter spines are found at the base of the bract.

Flowers in ray florets.
Leaves
Pinnatisect leaf is deeply lobed, almost to the central midrib. Elongated, narrow lobes almost to the central midrib of the leaf.
Fruits Seeds
Achene: a cluster of small, 1-seeded fruit, no tufts of hair.
