A clump-forming perennial. The bracts form a papery cup under the flower.

Often used in dry flower arrangements.

Dry pastures, open woodland and roadsides.

Flowers

Solitary flowers on tall, stiff stems. The flowers have fringed ray florets with a deep purple centre and stamens. Occasionally white and pink varieties can be found. Closed buds are soft and silvery.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Basal rosette: leaves almost linear with tiny teeth, grey-green.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of small 1-seeded fruit with narrow scales.
