Description

A thistle covered in minute glandular hairs, resembling spider webs. The stems are rigid, ribbed, straw-coloured or light green, branched at the top.

Cultivated, fallow and wastelands, olive groves, vineyards and roadsides.

Flowers

The flower heads have many long, sharp, leaf-like hairy bracts. The flowers are solitary with yellow, ray and disk florets.

Leaves

Pinnatisect leaf is deeply lobed, almost to the central midrib. Basal leaves: disappear before flowering.
Upper leaves: clasp the stem. Lobes almost to central midrib with spiny margins.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of small 1-seeded fruit, dull brown.
