Description

A plant with a creeping rootstock. The stem is 3-cornered with rounded edges. The leaves can be longer or shorter than the stems. In drought the leaf edges roll up. The lowest bract is nearly as long or often longer than the flower stalk.

Flowers

The flower spike (10-20 mm) has male flowers above and female flowers below. The female flowers are strikingly black, giving a chequered effect when in fruit.

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Blade, smooth or rough.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a spike of small dry one-seeded fruit, 2.5-3 mm long.
