Description

Straggly spiny shrub, often grown over walls where the long, hanging shoots best reveal the buds and flowers. The flower-buds, capers, are grown and used locally. They are also pickled and produced commercially in France and elsewhere.

Flowers

Attractive 4-petalled flowers, white or pink, with numerous purple stamens.

Leaves

Ovate leaf is egg-shaped, wider at base, Elliptic oval leaf. Egg-shaped to oval, tough, 2 small spines at base, 2.5 cm long.

Fruits Seeds

Berry: green or yellow, to 5 cm long.

Edible

Buds: capers, pickled in vinegar, have been used as a condiment for at least 2000 years.
