Description

The second name ‘trachelium’ derives from its former use as a cure for sore throats. A hairy plant, with square edged stems.

Open woodland, often found clambering through hedges and ditches. Long flowering.

Flowers

The slightly nodding flowers, pale blue or violet blue, rarely white, grow in spikes, opening from the top downwards. The five petals are fused together into the shape of a bell, hairy inside.

Leaves

Cordate heart-shaped. Heart-shaped, toothed and pointed like a nettle leaf.
