Description

Native to southern Europe. It grows on calcareous as well as acidic soil in different habitats, along the coast, grassy woodlands, open forests.

Used as an ornamental grass with slender, erect, hairless stems.

Flowers

Inflorescence: a loose panicle of green or purplish spikelets suspended on slender stalks. Each spikelet has male and female productive organs.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Rough, flat blade, 2-4 mm wide, 20 cm long.

Fruits Seeds

Caryopsis: a dry fruit, containing the grain.
