Description

The name of this plant has changed to Bituminaria bituminosa, but is still commonly known as Psoralea bituminosa. The plant strongly smells of tar.

Flowers

Pale purple flowers are borne in lateral long-stalked heads.

Leaves

Trifoliate with three leaflets. Three leaflets, elliptical, on a longish stalk, 1-6 cm long, covered in translucent dots (oil glands).

Fruits Seeds

Pod: pointed, curved towards end, 1.5 cm long.

Medical

Leaves and flowers: a substance called ‘psoralen’, present in Pitch Trefoil is used in the treatment of psoriasis, vitiligo and other skin conditions.
