Description

Previously known as Ceterach officinarum. An evergreen fern. The fronds are hairless above, but covered in orange-brown, scale-like hair below. The fern rolls up during drought, as if it is dead, to revive again after rain.

Unlike many other ferns it requires very little water and tends to grow in a sunny position in the cracks of alkaline rocks.

Pinnatisect leaf is deeply lobed, almost to the central midrib. Fronds: pinnately divided almost to central midrib, leathery.

Fruits Seeds

Sori: a cluster of spores, linear in shape, visible on the underside of the leaf.
