Description

The ancient Greeks planted it near tombs as it was considered to be food for the dead.

A tuberous perennial. The leafless stem carries a loose, branched cluster of flowers.

The tuber was used as glue.

Flowers

Star-shaped white flowers. Each flower consists of 6 tepals with a central brown streak.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Basal tuft, sword-like, greyish green, 50 cm long.

Fruits Seeds

Capsule: round, 7 mm.

Edible

Tubers: crushed with figs added, then baked; known as ‘Pain de disette’, that is, Bread of the poor.
Grains: dry roasted as a condiment.
