Description
A close relative of the Wild Asperge. It has been in cultivation for over 2000 years. In spring the young fleshy shoots appear. If not picked, they become upright stems with dense, soft, feathery foliage.
Flowers
Pale yellow, bell-shaped flowers, in pairs.
Leaves
Cladode flower grows from a leaf-like stem. Feathery, a cladode is a modified stem, needle-like in this instance.
Fruits Seeds
Pod: resembling a berry containing 3 seeds.
Edible
Young shoots: steamed.
Medical
Roots and young fresh stems: cleansing herb for liver, kidney and bowel.
