Description

Native to the Mediterranean region, growing in scrub and grassland. The name ‘hortensis’ derives from the word ‘hortus’ meaning ‘vegetable garden’. A very easy plant to cultivate.

Flowers

The fragrant flowers are pink to pale-purple with lance-shaped, pointed petals (12-19), a bluish stigma and numerous deep blue stamens.

Leaves

Palmate leaf has lobes radiating from a base point. 3-5 coarsely serrated lobes, all radiating from a base point, long-stalked.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of small dry, 1-seeded fruit, smooth and woolly.
