Description
The wood, under water, has a long life. It is thanks to the Alder that cities like Bruges, Amsterdam and Venice were able to be built. The wood can carry enormous weights. Clogs used to be made from Alder wood.
The bark has been used in the tannery and dyeing industry to produce a black dye.
Flowers
Female and male flowers on the same tree, male flowers in the form of catkins, female flowers broad and green, turning into black seed heads and remaining on the tree throughout winter.
Leaves
