Description

This plant has two ways of propagating, through seeds and through red, aerial bulbs (bulbils). As the flower ages, the bulbils become visible between the florets; when ripe they drop to the ground to form new plants.

Flowers

A tall, dark purplish-pink Allium with a round tightly packed inflorescense of florets.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Broadly linear, semi-cylindrical, slight groove on upper surface, 2-6 leaves.

Fruits Seeds

Capsule: springs open on 2 or more seams.

Edible

Leaves, flowers and bulbs have a garlic flavour, containing sulphur compounds.

Medical

All Alliums contain iron and vitamins and are slightly antibiotic.
