Description
The stalk itself is leafless, triangular in cross section.
Flowers
The flowers are long stalked, cup-shaped in the form of a cluster (5-9 cm).
Leaves
Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Broadly linear, long and narrow, wider at the base, pointed, prominent vein, 2-4 leaves surrounding the lower end of the flower stalk.
Fruits Seeds
Capsule: remains a long time on the plant.
Edible
Leaves, flowers and bulbs have a garlic flavour, containing sulphur compounds.
Medical
All Alliums contain iron and vitamins and are slightly antibiotic.
