Description

Full sun and relatively deep, rich soil.

Flowers

Flowers whitish-pink, pink, purplish or dark red. Each flower is cup-shaped, densely packed into a round ball, 5-9 cm across, with protruding stamens. There can be up to 500 flowers in each flowerhead. Before flowering the heads are covered in a membranous spathe.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Broadly linear, narrow, 50 cm long, rough at the edges, consisting of 4-10 leaves. These have usually withered away by flowering time.

Fruits Seeds

Capsule: splits open along 2 or more seams.

Edible

The stalks are used in the same way as cultivated leeks.

Medical

All Alliums contain iron and vitamins and are slightly antibiotic.
