Description

A neat, erect, fragrant plant, variable in size. Agrimony has deep, swollen, horizontal, stem-like roots called rhizomes.

Flowers

The flowers are borne on a long spike. The individual flowers, on short stalks, have 5 rounded, cup-shaped petals with 5-20 stamens and 5 sepals.

Leaves

Pinnate row of leaflets on either side of the stem. Round to oval, serrated leaflets; a pair of large leaflets alternating with a pair of smaller ones.

Fruits Seeds

Bur: dry fruit that has hooks or teeth.

Medical

Flowering plant, dried: one of the ingredients in ‘Eau d’Arquebuse’ used in the 15th century to treat battlefield wounds. (Arquebuse was the name of a portable, long-barrelled gun.)
